It has been more than 10 years now since I joined this forum. I tried teaching my kids to speak, read and write Cantonese. Writing quickly disappeared, then reading and lately I've lapsed in repeating all my speeches in both languages. Interestingly now that they're both teenagers and we live in a community with many Cantonese speakers (though English is mainstream), they enjoy eavesdropping on the bus or shopping mall of other Cantonese conversations. In fact one of them thanked me for teaching her Cantonese because she eavesdropped on an amusing gossip amongst a group of Chinese seniors on a bus!
So for those who have been around this forum for a while, what's your status with your teenage kids? Mine speak english as first, French as second through school, and understand enough Cantonese to amuse themselves catching bits of conversation. One is also learning Spanish through school. The other one can't decide if Spanish or Japanese.
Our family background, I am fluent in Cantonese and English, good knowledge of Portuguese and basic French. My wife speaks English and knows basic welsh.
