I also have here an alternative scheme, which is designed to work with both Cantonese and Mandarin whilst maintaining the distinction between the two languages. The colours chosen are relatively equidistant on the colour wheel, in order to maximise tone discernment:



I do also like the idea of shades for levels and hues for contours, though. I think both options should be given to users in the end.
