Is the CantoDict good?
[...]
Also, looking at CantoDict, there are lots of different words/phrases, how do I know which one to use?

The CantoDict is one of the best resources for a Cantonese student, but it's a dictionary, and you shouldn't use a dictionary to find words to learn. You need to have sources like coursebooks and texts, and then learn the words that are used there. Use the dictionary to look words up, check their meaning and pronunciation. At the start, learn the words and expressions that are used in your course, and learn them well. That's going to be mostly high-frequency, useful words. Then try to find simple texts and transcriptions (not so easy in Cantonese) of spoken dialogs and try to learn from them. My advice is, unless you have a need to speak from day 1, focus on passive recognition in the beginning.

That said, you could look through the example sentences in CantoDict to find useful words. The example sentences will usually not include obscure and low-frequency words.
