In the phrase 吹雞, 雞 (or 銀雞) refers to a “whistle”. Literally, 吹雞 means “to blow the whistle”, as what we’ve often seen in a march of disciplinary forces or in a soccer match. Figuratively, the Cantonese meaning is completely different from the English meaning of “whistle-blower”.
In figurative Canto, 吹雞 means to call upon people to do sth, e.g. to go to a party, to take part in a triad gang fight, etc. 吹大雞 means “to ask everyone to come” or “to mobilize each and everyone for a special occasion”.
