I do admit that Sam Hui is a great lyric writer in incorporating ancient poems into his works.
However, I admire more the music composers who have composed music for ancient poems.
In Cantonese, 紅豆相思 is a typical example in converting an ancient poem into a Canto pop. 滿江紅 (a lyrical poem originally written by 岳飛 of Song dynasty) is also a beautiful Canto song sung by the late Roman Tam.
I also like 三國演義 by Johnny Yip
The composer composed music for entire 《臨江仙》(a lyrical poem, I suppose) I haven't read the novel, but I know it was borrowed by the author somewhere in his book, the opening I suppose?
However, the piece was originally a lyrical poem which ryme quite well on its own, I it should be very helpful for the composer
