I went back to Hong Kong to work in October 1997, it was still a lively society. in three years, I could feel the increasing effect on opening up Hong Kong's gates to Mainland China. The second year I was working in Hong Kong, my salary could hire three qualified designers like me in Shenzhen, and my job moved north very soon, ( And I had to help them update their training for Hong Kong market). However, Hong Kong was still a beautiful city at the time I left.
Last year I went back to visit and the sigh of all those jewelry stores in Mong Kok sadden me, everywhere look uniformed, many people were poor before 97, but there's hope in those people's eyes, and now it is mostly gone,
My impression of Hong Kong now is: " it is like being occupied open city, the Cantonese culture's last stronghold will disappear. That's not the worst, the worst is I don't see many people care about it.
