I don't think he does. According to what I've read on the internet, his wife speaks cantonese. So when Zuckerburg said that he wants to learn "Chinese" to communicate with his wife's family, that's frankly a lie.
Because if you want to learn chinese to communicate with your cantonese speaking wife's family, you learn Cantonese. That's what I did, and I couldn't imagine learning mandarin to communicate with them-it would be pointless and unnecessary.
Obviously he doesn't have any interest in Chinese, because if he did, he'd jump at the opportunity of having Canto speakers to practice with.
He's just learning it because it's the "in" thing and because he wants to break into the chinese market. If Vietnam or some other country was the big emerging economy of the world, he'd be learning that language and not chinese.
In fact, I think it's a bit disrespectful if you marry a cantonese speaking family and learn mandarin and choose to ignore Cantonese.
I really dislike that he said it's to "communicate with his chinese speaking wife's family" when his wife speaks cantonese.
