After reading the many online comments on the readings of 朝鮮, I am given to understand that HK differs from Guangzhou in interpreting the meaning of 朝 in 朝鮮.
HK adopts the English interpretation of “Land of the Morning Calm” for 朝鮮 where 朝 means “morning” as a noun and should be read as ziu1 (Canto) and zhao1 (Mando).
Guangzhou and other parts of China prefer to use Chaoxian which is probably based on the historic Korean name “Choson” or "Joseon", interpreting 朝鮮 as “facing dawn” where 朝 is a verb. And 朝 should thus be read as ciu4 (Canto) and chao2 (Mando).
I notice that the Canto/Mando readings of 朝鮮 as listed in CantoDict have reflected such different interpretations. The Canto version is ziu1 (as used in HK) but the Mando version is chao2 (as used in China). And we know that ziu1 matches with zhao1 while ciu4 matches with chao2.
