It is possible. I admit I'd be more open to that interpretation if I hadn't already heard [ s ] and [ɕ] with the same vowels and indeed the same words (in one speaker). It's possible of course that it behaves differently, though I'll have to listen closely next time I talk to my Cantonese friends. The distinction I was talking about, though, was the historical one, which would be helpful to have in mind when learning and comparing Chinese languages.
